More than 4,000 people attended the 80’z All Stars concert at Founders Park in Ladera Ranch Saturday. The event was held at Founders Park and featured food vendors such as shaved ice, kettle corn and tacos. Friday is the end of the summer event with a Van Halen-themed concert at 6:30 p.m. and a food faire from 5 p.m. and will also feature face painters, air brush tattoo artists and balloon twisters.

SENDING HELP TO NEEDY IN OKLAHOMA

The Ladera Rancho Chamber of Commerce collected four big boxes of clothing and personal supplies during its Oklahoma Relief effort this summer. Chamber president John Alvarez was able to ship the boxes for free by UPS to a local Boys and Girls Club in Oklahoma. The remainder of supplies – including a computer, clothing and diapers – were donated to Laura’s House in Ladera Ranch.

NEW SHOP OPENS ITS DOORS

A Better Consign and Design opened its doors at the Mercantile East shopping center in Ladera Ranch this weekend. The shop sells used, upscale furniture and accessories. Owners are Sharon June of Laguna Niguel and Linda Scaglione of Aliso Viejo. Scaglione is an interior designer while June has an eye for finding unique furniture pieces, owners said. The owners find the items from the local community and encourage residents to schedule a free in-home preview of items they wish to sell. If the item sells in the store, the owners will split half the proceeds with the resident. The item can be displayed for 45 days. The store is at Antonio Parkway in Ladera Ranch and the phone is 949-429-2242.

TEEN LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

The Teen Leadership Council in Ladera Ranch is seeking residents who are seventh- to 12th-grade students. The council consists of 11 to 15 members who must be Ladera Ranch residents. The purpose of the council is to provide opportunities for teens to come together for leadership development and community outreach. Application deadline for the 2013-2014 membership is 5 p.m. Aug. 30. Apply on laderalife.com.

LOCAL MAN GRADUATES AIR FORCE

Michael Rommel, a 2008 Santa Margarita Catholic High School graduate, has graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. Rommel has served in the military for one year. He is the son of Ann and Craig Rommel of Coto De Caza.

SKILLED STUDENTS HONORED

Local students have earned placement on the dean’s list at Azusa Pacific University. Ladera Ranch students include Thomas Brawner and Mahala Hughes. Honored students need to have at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

RIDING FOR MIRACLES

Miracles for Kids’ annual motorcycle ride to benefit critically ill children will be held Sept. 29. The event, the Poker Run for Miracles, starts at the Orange County Harley-Davidson dealership in Irvine, with stops at Cook’s Corner at 19152 E Santiago Canyon Road in Trabuco Canyon and Bruxie at 22205 El Paseo in Rancho Santa Margarita before ending at Peppino’s Italian Restaurant at 26612 Towne Centre Drive in Foothill Ranch. The event, which features a silent auction, raffle prizes and entertainment, will raise funds for needy children battling cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. STEP INTO THE ROARING ’20S

Laura’s House, South County’s domestic abuse shelter based in Ladera Ranch, will hold its annual fundraising gala on Sept. 14 at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel and Spa. More than 300 guests will step into the roaring ’20s and raise money for domestic abuse victims with a cocktail reception, dinner, silent and live auctions and musical entertainment. The event committee includes Laguna Hills resident Wayne Pinnell, Sandy Jacobson, Silverado Canyon resident Linda Grace Kearns, Linda Lewis, Laguna Hills resident Kurt Ross, Casey Wolin, Ingrid Bobbitt and Silverado Canyon resident Donna Cippola. During the event, Laura’s House will honor Wells Fargo Corporation with its Crystal Heart Award in recognition for its commitment to support Laura’s House in its mission to change the social beliefs about domestic violence.
